Its App was downloaded 20 million times in one day.* Facebook is in fact one of the most trafficked sites in the world since its creation in 2004. There’s clearly no limit to the possible applications of digital technologies in 2012; virtual reality shops were a hit over the recent festive period, there are smartphone AR apps that allow you to effectively interact with your favourite celeb and Cadbury’s chocolate bars come to life as part of their ‘Spots vs Stripes’ Olympic Games sponsor activity. This week sees a number of big brands launch a trial of Google’s alternative to the QR code. Google’s Goggles is a
‘virtual seach app’ that matches the offline image against its own online repository of images.
Brands trialling the technology include French Connection, L’Oreal’s Garnier, Sony Music and Samsung, who will use it on their outdoor ads. Viewers of the ad who have the Goggles app on their phone will be able to take a photo of the poster and click through to relevant content on the brands’ mobile sites.

According to new research* companies that use Facebook and its fan page 
module to market themselves to customers can significantly increase sales, word-of-mouth marketing and customer loyalty.
Plymouth University recently used a Z-CARD® for their University Summer Ball and included a QR code leading to the event’s Facebook page. This provided the ultimate form of communication as students were able to keep the Z-CARD® with event information while engaging with the Facebook page.

The App industry is growing fast and research shows that more than 17 billion mobile applications will be downloaded from online stores this year, more than double the number of the mini-programs downloaded last year*. With election fever having occupied the minds of the public and marketers alike recently, I watched and interacted with interest, as for the first time I could comment on official twitter pages, engage in live conversations online on the major TV network websites, text in opinions and watch with, some amusement, as presenters on the BBC navigated the touch screen displays showing the latest results and opinions.
